In cooperation with abc GmbH, REINARTZ has launched a project with the help of which a bioeconomy concept for the innovative use of residual materials from leaves, roots and stems of the pineapple plant has now been established in Costa Rica.

Have a look – it’s worth it!
In the animal feed sector, insects have long been used as an alternative source of protein – for example in feed for dogs and cats. Approval for livestock, such as poultry and pigs, is expected this fall.
But insects also have many advantages as a food source for us humans. For example, they contain a lot of high-quality protein, valuable monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, as well as B vitamins and important minerals.
And similar to their use in animal feed, their use in the food sector would also be a relief for our climate. In direct comparison to animal breeding for covering human meat consumption, insects require much less space and water than cattle & co. The same is true for greenhouse gas emissions because these are also comparatively much lower with insects.
The advantages do not end there. The edible portion of insects is about 80 percent. To stay with cattle, here the proportionate share is just 40 percent.
Another food for thought: According to United Nations estimates, there will be more than 9.7 billion people on the planet by 2050. Currently, there are about 7.91 billion people. They and also their livestock and pets will need protein …
The first important step in this direction has been taken: according to EU approval, yellow, dried mealworms have been among the novel foods since May 2021. The larvae of the beetle Tenebrio molitor may be used, for example, in foods such as pasta, cookies or bars. We have been active in this field for many years and can therefore provide our customers in the insect sector with the best possible support. Protein production from insects for high-quality animal feed – an efficient and ecological alternative. CO2 balance of insects as well as the land and energy requirements for production speak for themselves. Production involves several stages, one of which is larvae fattening. But from the very beginning …
Insect larvae are rich in protein and full of essential amino acids. A perfect source for nutritious, healthy animal feed. The legal requirements for this are already partly in place: In aquaculture, they have been approved as feed throughout the EU since 2017. Insect food is also already a valuable alternative for dogs and cats. Approval at EU level to feed the insect meal to livestock is currently under review. It is expected that the use of insect proteins in poultry and pig feed will be allowed in autumn 2021.
An alternative feed source that can significantly improve our environmental footprint …
Back to insects and specifically to the black soldier fly (Hermetia Illucens): it goes through a so-called holometabolic life cycle, which consists of five development stages and lasts only 12 days before the adult stage and thus the maximum body size is reached.
Larvae fattening takes place in specially designed bioreactors. Important factors here are the substrate to be used, temperature regulation of environment and substrate, and the control of other influencing factors.
Using a sophisticated separation method, the larvae are then gently separated from the remaining substrate and prepared for processing in subsequent steps. The remaining substrate is used to produce insect fertilizer.
After devitalization, drying and optional pre-conditioning, high-quality insect meal and insect fat are obtained from the dried larvae with the help of REINARTZ machinery and system components. This is followed by post-processing of the obtained products, such as cooling of the insect meal, if necessary – depending on the production scale, and sedimentation or filtration of the insect fat to separate the remaining solids.

In the Rhineland, there is a scientific landscape for the bioeconomy that is unique in Germany. To what extent is this potential already being used in education and training for the regional economy?
