Dried insect products for animal feed recently approved in two African countries

Animal feed and feed proteins in particular, provides an enormous challenge when it comes to animal husbandry in many African countries – especially in the field of poultry and fish farming. Searching for an alternative source of protein for Kenia and Uganda the project partners of INSEED were delving into nutrition, microbial safety as well as the efficiency and value of insects for feeding poultry or fish. In cooperation with the governments these efforts finally resulted in the development of the now applicable standards for both countries: Dried insect products are allowed for being used in all animal and fish feedstuff. Though the amount of production in Kenia and Uganda presently still is relatively low, insect protein ideally will certainly replace fishmeal as animal feed component to a great extent.

Biomass – the key for realising climate targets

Questions relating to the environment currently are a matter of intense and frequent discussion within the European Union. It is clear that measures against climate change have to be taken quite urgently. An important approach is the strong development of renewable sources of energy, which is supported by the energy policy of the EU. However, one source of energy, older than any other and even most frequently available already exists: the biomass.

The potential of using biomass is as diverse as its presence – for example, residues from agriculture and forestry as well as from the woodworking industry are – after being processed – ideally suitable for generating electric energy for heating and as bio fuel components. In scientifically accompanied test series the Maschinenfabrik Reinartz continuously works on the enhancement and refinement of technologies for gaining energy from biomass. By developing innovative solutions in this field we significantly participate in the strive for reaching fundamental climate targets – for the energy of the future.

Reinartz emphasises leading position in the field of separation processes for insect proteins

Already the second processing plant for pressing of insects successfully has been put into operation this year. With this Reinartz again proves to be one of the most important innovation leaders in this field. The individually developed solutions for this range of application are major milestones enabling a scalability from the semi industrial to the industrial production. They cover the most important steps in the processing of insects and provide a continuous process which has been tried in practical tests already over a longer period of time. We are boosting improvements in this area by co-operation with competent partners. Currently two more plants are being implemented which shall provide insect proteins for the market in big quantities.
